SERVICES

The Cumbee Center provides free and confidential 24- hour emergency services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. In addition, the agency offers crisis and long term counseling, temporary emergency shelter, legal advocacy, referrals to social service agencies, support groups, emotional support, and community outreach programs. The Cumbee Center also offers educational presentations on domestic violence and sexual assault to schools, community and professional groups, and businesses.

In 2008, the Cumbee Center staff and volunteers assisted more than 2800 victims and family members of domestic violence and 200 survivors and family members of sexual assault in the six-county area, while the safe house provided emergency shelter for more than 230 battered women and children.

The Cumbee Center’s safe house is located in a confidential site in Aiken County. The safe house shelters up to 25 battered women and their children in a safe and caring atmosphere as they decide the future direction of their lives. While the Cumbee Center exists to support victims, the ultimate decision must be made by the clients themselves. The Cumbee Center’s operating philosophy is to help people identify their options.

The Cumbee Center supports whatever decisions the clients make.

Most clients come to the Cumbee Center with only the clothes on their backs and sometimes without shoes. Through community support, the Cumbee Center is able to furnish the victims with clothing, personal items, and food at no charge.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault, recovery is within reach. Trained staff and volunteer crisis counselors are available 24- hours a day by calling (803) 649-0480 or (803) 641-4162.
