Cumbee Center could not provide 24-hour crisis intervention, counseling and emergency shelter without its dedicated corps of volunteers and community support. Cumbee Center has long valued the ability of volunteer advocates to provide crisis intervention, support and assistance to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Volunteers provide support and advocacy for victims after work hours, 365 days a year. For over 25 years, our volunteers have responded to crisis calls, providing a nonjudgmental listening ear.

Our Center holds a 25-hour volunteer training multiple times a year. Along with Cumbee Center’s victim service providers, representatives of several area agencies as well as city and county offices donate their time and skills to train potential volunteers.

Requirements for volunteering:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be able complete 25 hours of volunteer training (mostly online)
  • Ability to respect client confidentiality
  • Ability to remain calm in crisis situations
  • Ability to listen and communicate in a non-judgmental manner

Just a few of our volunteer opportunities include:

Client Services Advocate
Client service advocates provide vital support to office staff of Cumbee Center. These advocates assist in many ways such as; greeting clients with a warm smile, answer phone calls, complete data entry assignments, and organization of donations, all while working directly alongside the Cumbee Center staff members.

Safe House Advocate
While ensuring our clients have a safe and nurturing home during their transition, our safe house advocates are given the opportunity to offer a variety of services. These include but are not limited to; talking with clients, reading and playing educational games with children, facilitate activities that empower survivors and teaching life skills.

Victim Advocate
Victim advocates volunteer their time during shifts throughout the week to respond to any emergency hospital calls for domestic or sexual violence. These advocates play a vital role in the recovery process. The initial contact with the victim is such a vital time to introduce the services we are able to offer to help empower them and begin the road to healing.
