Aiken sign display marks the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

People traveling along Aiken’s Whiskey Road Saturday morning were reminded that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 

A group of volunteers, led by Cumbee Center employees, held up signs to begin the center’s activities for the month at the H. Odell Weeks Activity Center Saturday morning.

The Cumbee Center will hold a chili cookoff from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday at the recreation center. And the annual Whiskey Road race is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Nov. 4. Start and finish for the race will also be at the activity center.

Summer months see a rise in domestic violence

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Studies show that the summer months see an increase in domestic violence. 

Summertime brings a range of factors that can contribute to a rise in domestic abuse- such as children being out of school, a change in access to resources like food and, even, higher temperatures. 

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.

Aiken’s Whiskey Road Race in November will feature family run

The Whiskey Road Race is celebrating its 45th year with a special family run on Nov. 4.

Alongside the regular competitive 5K and 10K race, a family race will take place with parents and kids.

“They wanted to make the run special this year and especially because it’s 45 years,” Betty Ryberg said. “We have people who ran when they were younger and then they’re going to run again with their own kids.”

The first parent will pay full price to race, but every family member after that will only pay half price, Ryberg said.

The entry fee is $35 for the 5K and $40 for the 10K, and past winners will receive a half-off discount. The Tot Trot and the 1 Mile Fun Run are both $5 to enter.

The proceeds will go toward The Cumbee Center, which serves victims of domestic abuse in Aiken.

A 1-mile run will also take place for children under 12 so every member of the family can be included.

“It’s been going on 45 years, there is a chance that you could have run as 4-year-old, and then you’re coming back now when you’re running as an adult with a child,” Ryberg said. “So that’s what we’re looking for.”

Fun prizes will be available for the winners of the family races along with the trophies available for the competitive races.

Families have started to register for the race, including the Stewart family, Ryberg said.

“I ran with Jim Stewart, I’m a marathon runner, so I trained with him for years,” she said. “So, he’s a wonderful example because he’s got all his kids to run.”

The Whiskey Road Race will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4. The 5K and the 10K will take place at 8:30 a.m. and the Tot Trot and 1 Mile Fun Run will start at 9:30 a.m.
