Free counseling is available to help survivors overcome complex challenges that are faced during recovery from domestic or sexual violence. Cumbee Center has two full-time counselors who provide psychosocial therapy for individuals and their families. We are committed to respecting the privacy and dignity of each person we serve and to holding in confidence all client identifying information obtained in the course of the helping relationship.

All information pertaining to any client of Cumbee Center is confidential and is not to be released to anyone for any reason, unless an informed and voluntary time-release form is signed. We recognize that at times there are compelling professional reasons when exceptions to this policy must be made.

Bi-lingual Services
We are able to provide survivors with trauma informed counseling services in Spanish as well as English.

Trauma-Informed Counseling

Counselors understand that survivors seeking counseling services have likely experienced traumatic stress, often repeatedly. While everyone experiences daily stress, traumatic stress involves someone experiencing overwhelming circumstances that have threatened their physical or mental well-being and left them feeling vulnerable, helpless, afraid and out of control. Our counselors and staff have been well equipped with the skills necessary to meet survivors where they are, figuratively speaking, in order to best meet their needs.

*Confidential Spaces: Only the counselor and client are to be present during counseling, a sound machine will be used to act as a sound barrier in order to take an extra step of confidentiality to our clients.

EMDR Therapy
EMDR therapy is an approach that our counselors are able to use with survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence. This type of therapy involves attention to three time periods:  the past, present, and future.  Focus is given to past disturbing memories and related events.  Also, it is given to current situations that cause distress, and to developing the skills and attitudes needed for positive
future actions.  With EMDR therapy, these items are addressed using an eight-phase treatment approach, which will be thoroughly discussed by the counselor.
